Commission welcomes agreement on new rules for more resilient and secure Schengen area

On 6 February, the Commission welcomed the political agreement reached between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on new rules for the Schengen Borders Code. This will strengthen EU coordination in managing cross-border health and security threats.

The Schengen area has faced different challenges over recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and cross-border security threats such as terrorism, drug trafficking, organised crime, as well as migration-related challenges.

In December 2021, the Commission proposed to update and revise the Schengen Borders Code. The aim is to ensure the proper functioning of the Schengen area, both at the external and internal borders.
